The Impact Of Diversity On Travel, Tourism & The Arts

Boston is a city of champions, and we CONGRATULATE the Boston Red Sox for winning the World Series. That spirit of winning also describes the incremental advancements made in travel, tourism, and the arts and how diversity impacts the region.

About Our Roundtable Speakers

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority appointed Michael Munn Chief of Staff and Director of Business Development for the Boston Convention Marketing Center (BCMC). Munn is responsible for developing programs in support of the BCMC and implementing diversity initiatives that focus on Boston's multicultural and multinational qualities. Previously, he was Director of Business Development and Project Management for WoodArt Exhibit Group, Vice President of Sponsorship Programs at the National Managed Health Care Congress and Manager of Business Development and Partner Alliances at the Hurwitz Group, a strategic e-business marketing, research and consulting company.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Julia Mejia has lived most of her life in Dorchester, MA, where she began a life-long commitment to serving youth and families and raising awareness about issues affecting historically marginalized populations. At the age of eight, Julia began advocating on behalf of her mother and other non-English speaking parents who were often intimidated and underserved by the very agencies designed to address their needs. While working on behalf of others, Julia also navigated her way to educational success and became the first person in her family to graduate from high school and college.

Upon earning her Bachelors from Mount Ida College, Julia honed her professional skills through pro-social work for both public and private sector organizations, including MTV, the Ad Council, Proctor & Gamble, The Center for Social Policy at UMass Boston and various non-profits throughout Boston. After gaining professional experience and greater perspective on how to effect change in underserved communities, Julia established her own non-profit organization dedicated to creating space for families to inform, influence, and inspire policies to impact today’s most vulnerable learners.

As the Founder and Executive Director of the Collaborative Parent Leadership Action Network, ( CPLAN),   Julia cultivates meaningful relationships between key decision-makers and the families they serve. CPLAN works with policy-makers, educators, parents and community leaders to improve the educational opportunities and outcomes of all students by authentically engaging the voices of all stakeholders.   Julia is also the founder of the Determined Divas Civic Challenge- a project created to engage communities of color in the electoral process.

Raquel Halsey 
Executive Director, North American Indian Center of Boston
Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara Nation
 
Raquel Halsey joined the Board of Directors for the North American Indian Center of Boston in February 2015. During her time on the Board, she worked to strengthen NAICOB’s education initiatives, deepen partnerships with universities and agencies, and worked with staff to improve the outcomes and experiences of clients. Following the previous Executive Director's retirement, Raquel was named Interim Executive Director in August 2016.

Before moving to Boston, she worked with children and families in the District of Columbia and Maryland during her time with CASA for Children of DC and with StandardsWork. At CASA for Children of DC, Raquel trained caring adult volunteers to advocate for youth in foster care and coordinated opportunities for youth aged 14-21. A StandardsWork, a nonprofit education consultancy, she helped to develop curricula and deliver training for teachers. Raquel began her career on Capitol Hill, advising Congressman Albert Wynn on legislation concerning Native Americans, seniors, and housing.

Since 2011, Raquel has worked with her family's production company, ArbonaWorks, to produce documentaries, special live events, and training videos for advocacy groups, nonprofits, and government agencies. She helps to establish relationships with communities near project sets, assists with content development and advises the company on current and future endeavors.

Beth Santos is founder and CEO of Wanderful, a global community of over 40,000 women who love to travel. Beth created Wanderful while living in Sao Tome and Principe, a small two-island nation off the west coast of Africa. Today, the community connects women together through regular events in over 30 global cities, an international, identity verified woman-to-woman homesharing network, dynamic online content, and forums, and inspired, focused campaigns with international travel brands.

Beth is the creator and host of the annual Women in Travel Summit for 400 female travel influencers and industry members, happening this May 2019 in Portland, Maine. She is the co-founder of #AtTheTable, a national dinner series, and community for female founders. She is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management, where she received her MBA in social enterprise, entrepreneurship & innovation, and management strategy, and was selected for the prestigious Zell Fellowship created by real estate mogul Sam Zell. Beth is a Chicago Scholars 35 Under 35 Young Leader Making an Impact, a White House Top 100 Travel Blogger, an alum of the Babson WIN Lab and one of Built in Chicago’s top 50 influential people in tech to follow on Twitter. She lives in Boston.
